About Debra Zilavy
“Practical…..direct…..interactive…..helpful…..respectful…”

“She won’t tell you what to do, but she’ll help you figure out what YOU want.”

These are some of the ways Dr. Zilavy’s approach to therapy has been described.

Dr. Debra Zilavy (often referred to as “Dr. Z”) is a seasoned therapist who draws on a multitude of life experiences in her work with adults over age 18. From commercial fishing in Alaska to working in a corporate setting, she’s been exposed to many different ways of seeing the world, and recognizes that each person is a unique blend of their life experiences, cultural background, spirituality and physical and mental abilities. She is sensitive to even the most difficult life circumstances.

Dr. Zilavy’s approach is tailored to the needs of each person, and can be brief (10 sessions or less) or longer and more in-depth. She is a registered nurse as well as a clinical psychologist and understands the mind-body connection and how health and medical issues can compromise emotional well-being.

Some of the theoretical orientations she has studied include: Gestalt therapy (certified), Transactional Analysis, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Feminist therapy, somatic therapy, mindfulness and hypnosis, Self Psychology, existential therapy, Rational Emotive Therapy (RET), Transpersonal therapy and psychodynamic psychotherapy. She is a former graduate school teacher and she has done research on stereotyping and how it affects a person’s self esteem and world view. Dr. Zilavy considers herself to be a consultant, educator, mentor, and helper as well as healer and therapist.
